Most Improved

This 9-weeks most improved is Avery. She is growing by leaps and bounds in her reading and continues to do a terrific job in math. Avery is a hard worker and excellent at following directions. Great job Avery!

Mighty Teeth Day

February is dental health month.  We will be doing various lessons in class on how to have healthy teeth throughout the month.  In addition, here is a free opportunity to help keep your children's teeth healthy:

Duval County elementary students, ages 5-12, are welcome to receive a complimentary fluoride varnish dental application on Saturday, February 25, 2012 for Mighty Teeth Day.

Fluoride varnish is an effective means of strengthening teeth to prevent dental decay. The fluoride varnish is painted onto the teeth quickly and painlessly. All students will be examined by a dentist prior to the application of the varnish. Students must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who will sign a consent form prior to fluoride application. The students will receive oral hygiene instructions, enjoy oral health games and activities, and are guaranteed a fun dental experience.

The Mighty Teeth Day will be held at Florida State College at Jacksonville - North Campus. The address is 4501 Capper Rd., Dental Clinic, Bldg. A, Third Floor, Jacksonville, FL 32218.

Reservations are required for this event as spaces are limited. Call (904) 766-6573 to schedule your reservation. Time slots are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

100th Day

I have had my eyes set on Valentines Day and I almost forgot about another special occasion... the 100th day of school!
Friday, February 3, we will celebrate the 100th day of school with a variety of classroom activities.  I need your and your child's participation at home for a few of them.

I will send a note home this Friday concerning a special project your child will need to complete.  They will need to make something using EXACTLY 100 of something.  I will give some examples in my letter, but I really want your child to get creative.  Since I'm sending the note home on Friday, they will have exactly a week to think of a project and put it together.  Because of this, I will not send the usual math homework.  The purpose of the activity is to see how different 100 can look.  I would like all projects to be turned in on Friday, February 3.  I'm asking the projects NOT be turned in sooner than that as we have no place to store them.  The kids will have opportuinites throughout the day to share their project.

Another request is that we will indulge in a 100th day snack.  Each child is asked to bring in about 100 small snack items to share with the class.  Again, I will detail this in the letter on Friday.  Some things brought in the past include M&Ms, peanuts, raisins, cheerios, skittles, etc...
We will fill a 100s chart with these small items and each child will take home a snack of 100 things.  That is if they don't eat any of it :)

I wanted to give you the heads up in case you were out shopping and wanted to prepare for these two things.  I appreciate you helping your child with these two assignments.

MLK

Last week we studied Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The kids heard about his dream for equality. They wrote down their own dreams for the future. Ask your child what their dream is.

Souper Bowl of Caring

Bring Donations for Souper Bowl of Caring Jan 30th-Feb 3rd

Our school is proud to participate in the 2012 Souper Bowl of Caring. Souper Bowl of Caring uses the energy around our nation’s biggest sporting event to mobilize and inspire youth to fight hunger in their community. During the event, Loretto students will collect non-perishable food items and give 100% of the collected items to the Mandarin Food Bank. We will report our total to Souper Bowl of Caring so our students become part of the local and national total. Working together, we can make a difference in Jacksonville and across the nation.

FCAT buddies

As we approach FCAT testing time, Loretto likes to instill a sense of community and encouragement.  Each K-2 classroom is paired with a 3-5 classroom to be their "FCAT buddy".

Our class is buddies with Mrs. Beltz's 4th grade class.  FCAT writing is coming up first on February 28th.  I'm looking for some ideas on what we could do for her class to encourage and motivate them to do their best on the writing test.  Simple ideas include sending in a treat for them or we could spend some more time on a craft of some sort.  A motivational saying would also tie in nicely.  If you have any thoughts or ideas, please let me know!

As we come up with a game plan, I will need some parent involvement to help with materials and possible some of your time to create a project.  I will keep you posted.

New Years

We discussed the New Years holiday and the many traditions that go along with it (ball drop, fireworks, and parades just to name a few).

We then talked about what a resolution is and why people promise things in hopes of a fresh start in the new year.

Each child, decorated a party hat with their resolution.

I'm afraid this promise may have already been broken:

A parents dream!

Valentines

It occurred to me today that Valentines Day was just over a month away!  I will compose a list of boys and girls for our classroom and send it home at the end of January or beginning of February.  Participating in our classroom Valentine exchange is completely optional, but if you choose to do so, I ask that you provide every student with a Valentine.  We have 18 kids in our class as of right now if you're shopping early.

I like to make "mailboxes" to collect the children's valentines.  In order to complete this project, I need one clean, dry gallon milk jug from each student.  Please begin collecting them now.  If you are able, go ahead and set aside two in case we are short some.  I would love it if you could keep it at your home until we are ready to create the mailboxes as we have a shortage of space in the classroom.
I will let you know when I need them sent in.  Thanks so much!

Book Fair

The annual Loretto Book Fair will be Jan. 23 thru Jan. 31.
I will let you know what day and time we sign up for.  I know there is also usually one or two family nights where they stay open later so parents can attend after school.

The book fair takes place in the library, so as a result there will be no library book check out Jan. 23 thru early February.  In the past, I was able to check out books in my name and loan them to the children so that they could still have a regular flow of books going home.

I will keep you updated with information!

FAIR

It's time for the second administration of FAIR.  This is an assessment in reading that is done state-wide.  Beginning this year, it will affect promotion for children in K-2.

This test scores your child on their sight word knowledge, reading fluency, reading comprehension, and reading level.  Based on this information, I may have to work on some more intensive exercises to see their letter/sound knowledge, word blending, phoneme deletion, and word building skills.

You will receive a detailed letter at the end of the month informing you on your child's progress.
