Scholastic Book Order
Our last order of the year was placed in your child's folder today. Please take a look at all of the great offers on books. Think ahead to summer if you're able.
The attached yellow paper has instructions on how to order online. This is the best way for me to gather all of your orders. If you would rather send a check with your order forms, I can input the orders for you.
Orders are due next week, before we leave for Spring Break. Please make all orders online by Saturday, March 17. Thanks for your help! Remember, every dollar you spend, earns points for the classroom to buy books and other materials.

Sunshine Math Drawing
Congratulations to Wyatt! His name was drawn along with another first grader for a prize of a Target gift card! Each paper that is completed gets the student's one entry into a drawing. I believe this is only the second time the drawing has been done. The first drawing Jared won a Toys-R-Us gift card.
You'll be hearing more about the Sunshine Math Contest coming up at the end of March or early April. There should also be a party towards the end of the year for students who attempted the majority of their worksheets.

Practice website
We have been focusing on building our vocabulary each week. These are words that are separate from our high-frequency words. These are typically words that the children need to learn in order to read the story of the week. We also spend some time discussing what they mean. Here is a really fun site to practice the words:

Homework Week of February 20
Due to the shortened week, we will be taking the week to review Theme 6 in reading and I will also administer the Theme 6 test. In preparation for this, I will not send reading homework, but encourage you to practice the following skills when listening to your child read:
Story Structure
-identifying characters, setting, problem, and solution
Noting Details
-Remember tiny details from the story including the names of characters.
Predicting
-At the beginning, in the middle, and at the end
-If their predictions changed, discuss what happened to make them change them.
Other things worth practicing are reviewing sight words, discussing opposites, and talking about long vowels ("an e on the end makes the vowel say it's name).
Spelling and Math homework will remain the same.

Bulletin Board
The 1st grade was in charge of the bulletin board in the main hallway for the month of Jan. The children heard the story "Sunshine on my Shoulder" and wrote a response. Jared's writing was chosen from our class. Great job Jared!

Most Improved
This 9-weeks most improved is Avery. She is growing by leaps and bounds in her reading and continues to do a terrific job in math. Avery is a hard worker and excellent at following directions. Great job Avery!
