Field Trip

We will take our first field trip to the UNF Nature Trails on Tuesday, October 23.

We will be guided through some of the trails and end with science stations where the students will explore living and non-living things as part of our first grade science curriculum.

As of right now, I am allowed two parent chaperones.  If you are interested in attending with us, please mark the appropriate place on your child's permission form.  I will do a drawing to pick two parents.  Once you have been chosen, the cost is $5 per chaperone.

Student cost is $9.50.

All permission slips and monies (student and chaperone) are due no later than Monday, October 15.

I will be posting more details about the field trip in the weeks to come.

Boosterthon

The Boosterthon Fun Run kicked off today with a thrilling pep rally and I am super excited about this year’s program.

The Boosterthon Fun Run program involves all students in a fun, team building, fitness event. The central focus of this year’s character program is CHOICES. On the road of life, there are a lot of choices to make. This year’s character theme is HIGHWAY USA and the Booster Team will take students on a fun-filled journey teaching them the importance of making the choices that count.

Through the Boosterthon, I receive 10% of what our class raises to help go towards supplies for our classroom. On top of that, our entire school is raising much needed funds for the AR program, AR store, sunshine state math and other school wide curriculums.

Here’s how you can help:

1) LOG-ON to your student’s website at www.FunRun.com using your student’s Pledge Book and access code. Log on each night to watch the Highway USA music videos, and enter pledge information.
2) GET PLEDGES by connecting your student with 10 sponsors.
3) COME TO THE BOOSTERTHON FUN RUN NEXT WEEK! Remember, students will be running 25-35 laps and we would love to have lots of support for our team!

Thank you for supporting our classroom and our school!

October Book-It Goal

This is the first month we will be participating in the Book-It Reading program.  There are 31 days in October, so I have set the reading goal at 25 books.  This can be books read to them or books they read independently.  Be sure to write both types in their reading log.

Students who meet their goal get to put a sticker on our Book-It reading chart and receive the pizza certificate mentioned in the original post.

Students who meet their goal every month through April get to attend a pizza party with me!

Book-It Reading Program

The only way to get better at reading is to do it. So, with the help of the BOOK IT!® Program, our class

will be “reading our hearts out” for the next six months.

The BOOK IT! Program is all about turning kids who read because they have to into kids who read

because they WANT to. Your child has the opportunity to earn Reading Award Certificates by meeting

monthly reading goals that I will set. The reading award certificate can be redeemed at Pizza Hut®

where your child will receive their very own free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza® to celebrate the

reading accomplishment. There is no purchase necessary and pizza can be taken to go. On the first visit,

they will also receive an official BOOK IT! Passport to Reading and sticker to track their reading

throughout the program months. On subsequent visits, they will get another free Personal Pan Pizza

and sticker to add to their passport.

The BOOK IT! Program is sponsored by Pizza Hut and has been in elementary schools now for more than

27 years. You might have participated in the program when you were in school! To learn more, please

visit bookitprogram.com/parents.

I hope you will join us and encourage your child to read their heart out.

Volunteering

It is important that you have your volunteer card current if you plan on doing things with our classroom.  I mention this with special attention to our upcoming field trip at the end of October.  Parents who do not have a current volunteer card will not be able to attend.

Click on this link to register to be a volunteer in Duval County:
https://dcps.infomart-usa.net/app/index.php?aid=28

Once you register, your card is good for 2 years before you need to renew it.  So, if you were new to Loretto last year and recently applied to be a volunteer, then you probably have a current card.

The link I posted has additional information to questions you might have.

Spelling Test

You may have noticed a slight difference in the graded spelling tests that went home this week.

In addition to the 10 words that fit your child's weekly spelling pattern, I will also dictate a sentence they need to write down.

The sentence is carefully selected and composed of words that fit their weekly pattern, previous patterns, and sight words.  I will also be looking to see that their sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a period.  The first few weeks, I will do plenty of reminding when it comes time to write the sentence, but slowly I will take away the prompts to see that they are doing this on their own.

The sentence will be a part of their final score.  Most weeks, the test will be worth a total of 20 points.

Box Tops

Our first submission date for Box Tops is the beginning of November so the coordinator is asking for all box tops to be turned in by Friday October the 19th so she may get them all counted and sorted.
See full size image

The top collecting class on each grade level will earn an ice cream party.
Top earning classes will be mentioned in the Loretto newsletter.

We will have another submission date in the spring and another chance to earn an ice cream party for our class. Please make sure when you turn in the box tops that you include my name and your child's name on the bag. At the end of the year, if there is enough money in the budget, gift cards will be purchased for top earning students.

Class Shirts

Class T-shirts (different from Loretto shirts) are being sold for $5.  We will be wearing these shirts to field trips, play day, and other special events.  Order forms were passed out at Open House.  Please turn in form and CASH payment by THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4.

Progress Reports

Can you believe it's already half way through the first nine-weeks of school?  Time is really flying!

Progress Reports were sent home on Wednesday to let you know how your child is doing mid-year. Please sign and return as soon as possible so I know you are aware of your child's grades at this point.  If you would like a copy of the report, please let me know and I will send an additional copy home.

If you have questions or concerns, send me an e-mail or we can set up a conference to discuss.
